(Don't) Hold the Phone: Never Used Before Features in Google Pixel 4

Google Pixel 4

Last month, Google officials shared that they are working on pixel 4. Before its release, company made an official announcement and gives an early look at the technology of two features added first time on their product.  And these two features are Motion Sense and face unlock.

Motion Sense:

As per the officials, for the past five years Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects team has been working on Soli. Soli was considered as the secret star of Google, it uses radar to detect 3D movement in space. Radar is the same technology that uses radio waves to determine the range, velocity, or angle of objects like aircrafts, ships, spacecraft, guided missiles, motor vehicles, weather formations and terrain. By using the same technology, Google developed a miniature version located at the top of Pixel 4. As per the Google statement “This miniature version senses small motions around the phone, combining unique software algorithms with the advanced hardware sensor, so it can recognize gestures and detect when you are nearby”.

With this feature user can skip the song, snooze the alarm, and silence the phone calls just by waving his /her hand. Google added that there could be more in store for it in future. This new feature will be available in selected Pixel countries at launch.

Face Unlock:

There was a day when anyone could unlock your phone simply, then there comes password and pattern unlock system and with this your phones became more secure. After this fingerprint sensors were introduced, which made the smartphones most secured. Still it was not enough, when face unlock sensors came into existence, Google is going to use the same feature in their smartphones but they are engineering it differently.

Till now to use face unlock feature, all you have to do is look at the phone’s front facing camera or sensor, pose in a certain way. After it identifies you, then you have to swipe to go to the home screen. But Google officials claimed that “with Soli technology, pixel 4 proactively turns on the face unlock sensors, recognizing that you may want to unlock your phone. If the face unlock sensors and algorithms recognize you, the phone will open as you pick it up, all in one go”.

In 2018 a report was published in which it was mentioned that according to Kaspersky Labs “an inexpensive phone’s facial recognition relies on just the front facing camera and some not so advanced algorithms. But a regular 2D camera without an IR sensor or dot projector can be easily fooled by photos snagged from social media profile and printed on paper or shown on a screen”.

Security and privacy concerns were always the core principles for Pixel, so to protect its user’s security and privacy Pixel store the users face data securely in Pixel’s Titan M security chip without saving or sharing it with other Google services.
