 Samsung Electronics is preparing the Artificial Intelligence (AI) processor-embedded high bandwidth memory (HBM) chip (processor). This will reduce energy consumption and increase performance. The company said that it is using processing-in-memory (PIM) technology in it. PIM combines logic-based hard units inside memory.

'HBM2 Aquabolt' is Samsung's second generation HBM DRAM chip. It is mainly used for high performance computing and AI applications in the market from January 2018.

Energy consumption will be reduced by 70%

The company says that its HBM-PIM solution doubles the performance of AI systems. This reduces energy consumption by up to 70% compared to the current HBM2. Samsung is the world's largest memory chip producer.

AI related requirements will be met

According to a report by Yonhap News Agency, the latest product also supports the existing HBM interface. This means that customers can setup AI accelerator systems without changing hardware or software. The AI ​​accelerator is computer hardware, designed to meet the requirements associated with AI.

Samsung said that it is installing the AI ​​engine in all the memory banks, so that the performance is boosted without delay. HBM-PIM also reduces data moves between processor and memory.
